  • How can I get rid of snoring?

For a long time, I’ve had a habit of snoring while sleeping and it keeps getting worse with aging. I personally don’t face any problem due to the condition but feel for the people that live with me and think it can get irritating if someone is trying to sleep?

How can I improve my condition?

    Reasons Of Snoring

    1. Being overweight or out of shape. Fatty tissue and poor muscle tone can contribute to snoring.
    2. Age. As you mentioned, once you go beyond middle age, your throat becomes narrower, and the muscle tone in your throat decreases.
    3. Nasal and sinus problems. Blocked airways or a stuffy nose make inhalation difficult and create a vacuum in the throat, leading to snoring.
    4. Sleep posture. Sleeping flat on your back causes the flesh of your throat to relax and block the airway.
    5. Deviated Nasal Septum (deviated bone)
    6. Smoking and medications.

    Treatment Of Snoring
The treatment of snoring is symptomatic i.e. it highly depends on actual underlying cause of snoring.

    • Get yourself examined by an ENT specialist who can recommend a proper treatment as per the symptoms. For example: You may be recommended a proper exercise and diet control program to control, if the problem is associated with your weight or lifestyle (smoking etc). If you have a deviated bone, you may need to undergo a surgery. Your ENT should be able to decide the best course of action
    • You should also check out anti-snoring nasal appliance/strips for temporary. You need to get used to them, but if you can, they can provide a good temporary relief from snoring. Such strips are generally available at renowned pharmacies like D-Watson (Islamabad), Fazal Din’s (Lahore) or Time Medicos (Karachi).

Thank you. I’m not overweight. But I’ve had issue with Sinus for the past 8 years since I had an injury in my nose. As suggested in another answer, I’m currently using anti-snoring nasal appliance whenever this problem becomes acute.
